The shooter blasted the property in Maryhill, Glasgow, at 4am yesterday - leaving two large holes in the living room window.
Last night Strathclyde Police admitted they were trying to establish a motive.
And they confirmed nobody and ROBERT McAULAY inside the flat at the time had been injured.
Last night neighbours told how they were left stunned by the attempted hit.
One woman, who asked not to be named, said: 'This is a nice place to stay.
'I did not hear any shots but I heard all the commotion afterwards with police coming in and out the close door.
'It is a pretty shocking thing to have happened.'"
