Five people have been arrested following a drug bust that was spread to three different locations in the Tri-State. Four of the men arrested are from the Los Angeles area; one is from Hamilton.
"This was a large shipment that was coming in to feed those that are addicted to these illicit narcotics," said Hamilton Police Chief Neil Ferdelman.
The five were arrested as part of a drug investigation involving Hamilton Police, Cincinnati Police, ATF, and the Butler County Prosecutors office. Two kilograms of crack cocaine, 10 kilograms of powder cocaine, and $28,000 were recovered from vehicles and a storage unit -- investigators say the drug originated from street gangs in Los Angeles.
"An this organization was using several businesses and residents in Hamilton and the areas of Butler and Hamilton Counties, as safe houses and storage areas for a large quantity of drugs," Ferdelman said.
The drugs were found in vehicles in two locations in Cincinnati and one in Sharonville on I-75. Investigators say Hamilton has become a hub for drug activity because of its central location.
"Hamilton, Ohio is a drug corridor for both Cincinnati and Dayton, it is a major drug trafficking corridor," said Special Agent Jim Deir.
Cincinnati Police Chief James Craig says as a former member of the LAPD, he is very much in tune with the violent LA gang culture.
"And this should be a message to anyone else in LA who's part of a gang who wants to come here and peddle their drugs that you will go to jail," Craig said.
All five of the men are charged with conspiracy to trafficking in drugs, a first degree felony. Police say more charges are pending. The suspects were booked into the Butler County Jail, one of them posted bond.
