Earl Simmons, better known as the rapper DMX

20:06 | ,

Earl Simmons, better known as the rapper DMX, said from jail in Phoenix his recent arrest came because he took a slug of alcohol at a concert in Scottsdale.

Court records said DMX was arrested Thursday on several charges, including probation violation, the ongoing use of cocaine, the use of narcotic painkillers without a prescription, and failing to submit to drug testing, Phoenix television station KSAZ-TV reported.

DMX, released from jail for previous offenses this summer, said he read the Bible while he was incarcerated, and he had changed his life.Hip-hop star and actor DMX has been jailed in Arizona for violating his probation by using drugs such as cocaine, the Maricopa County Sheriff's office said.

The rapper was released from a Maricopa County jail last May after serving 90 days of his 18-month sentence for cruelty to animals, theft and drug charges.

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio told The Arizona Republic DMX, whose real name is Earl Simmons, was jailed Tuesday night because he used illicit drugs regularly during the past nine months, despite having been given many opportunities to undergo treatment for substance abuse.

He spoke about his jail time in a recently released single called "Ya'll Don't Really Know."
