Donald Ray Dokins appeared in court Friday and a judge set his bail at $3 million. He did not enter a plea and his arraignment was postponed until July 16.

Angel Cortez Nava was fatally shot in the stomach as his father cradled him. The father, 24-year-old Mauro Cortez, was hit in the shoulder.

The reputed gang member appeared in court and was charged with first-degree murder and attempted murder as an adult, despite his age.

Thought to be a member of the Fudgetown Mafia Crip gang, Dokins was identified as a suspect within days of Angel's death and is believed by police to be a 'suspect in previous murders'.

Detectives with the Los Angeles Police Department have accused Dokins of being a member of a clique within the Fudgetown gang called T.Funk Ridaz.

On June 4 on the 10500 block of Hickory Street, Angel was being held by his father Mauro Cortez at the side of a car when the shooter, riding on a bike fired several shots into the crowd around the vehicle.

One bullet hit the child in the stomach and as he died was cradled in his father's arms, despite the fact that he had been shot in the left shoulder.

The police believe that because Cortez had been wearing a purple shirt, which is the colour of the Fudgetown gangs rivals the Barrio Grape Street gang, he was shot.

Authorities say the shooting was gang-related but Cortez wasn't in a gang.

In the direct aftermath of baby Angel's death, the public were outraged and a $100,000 reward was offered for any information leading to the identity of the shooter.

Arrested on Wednesday June 27, Dokins' family insist that he was not the gunman and was with them when the incident occured.

'He’s not no gang member. He is a Christian. If you want to call Christianity a gang, then he is. He a Christian. He from a Christian gang. He is a family oriented little boy, educated, liked to go to school, loved children, would never do anything like this,' said Dokin’s aunt, Tahiti Perkins to CBS Los Angeles
