Rochester's police chief says ending gang-related crimes is his number one issue.
So why do teens join gangs, and what can the community do to prevent it?
On Tuesday, a former gang member shared his story with Senator Kirsten Gillibrand as she held a press conference in Rochester on her new anti-gang initiative. Twenty-year-old Lawrence Richardson wants other young people to avoid the same mistakes he made.
'I was a gang member,' he said. 'I was out there in the streets, from the lack of opportunities"
