Stephon Whethers, 27, of Hempstead was riding a bicycle at 4:26 p.m. inside Centennial Park when he allegedly fired multiple rounds from a handgun at two men. According to detectives, he hit one victim once in the stomach, then continued to follow them and shot the victim again in the upper arm and mouth, and the other victim in the foot. He also pointed his handgun at a mother and her 11-year-old daughter while ordering them to get out of his way, along with multiple other bystanders.
A police officer patrolling the park overheard the shots and went to investigate. Police then say that the officer pursued Whethers and saw him throw the handgun into a parking lot on Babylon Turnpike and then fall from his bicycle.
More police arrived at the park after they were notified by ShotSpotter, and both victims were brought to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow. The first victim was admitted in critical but stable condition and the second was treated and released.
Whethers is charged with attempted murder, criminal possession of a weapon, criminal use of a firearm, menacing, and reckless endangerment and has open warrants for VTL violations and marijuana possession. He will be arraigned Friday in Hempstead.
