Man held over Kevin ‘Gerbil’ Carroll slaying | The Sun |Home Scotland|Scottish News: "Ross Monaghan, 28, is expected to appear in court next week after Strathclyde officers nicked him in the 4am swoop in Ralston, near Glasgow.
It is understood a warrant has also been issued for the arrest of 30-year-old William Paterson - believed to be living in Marbella, Spain.
It comes just two months after Carroll, 29 - a henchman of the notorious Daniel crime clan - was laid to rest in a lavish underworld funeral.
He was shot dead as he sat in the back of a black Audi in an Asda supermarket car park in January.
Detectives have quizzed a string of people over his slaying. This is the second arrest.
In March, Craig Gallagher, 30, was charged but released before a scheduled appearance at Glasgow Sheriff Court. A Crown Office spokesman had said: 'Crown Counsel instructed this man should be liberated pending further investigation.'
Some of Glasgow's most notorious underworld figures had gathered for Gerbil's send-off at the city's Lambhill Crematorium in May.
They included Norman 'Snudge' Daniel, David 'Muncher' Daniel, Robert Daniel Jnr as well as Ronnie Daniel Snr - rumoured to be the head of a £16million criminal empire.
Monaghan is expected to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Monday.
A Crown Office spokesman said: 'The procurator fiscal has received a report concerning two males aged 28 and 30. A 28-year-old is in custody and is expected to appear on Monday.'"

Feds Peel Back Chrome On Motorcycle Gangs : NPR

Posted On 17:40 0 comments

Feds Peel Back Chrome On Motorcycle Gangs : NPR: "federal agents spanned out over seven states to arrest more than two dozen members of the Outlaws motorcycle club and charged them with weapons and racketeering offenses.
The case lifted a curtain on the violent lifestyle of one of the nation's largest outlaw motorcycle gangs.
Club members gathered for a memorial service for Thomas Mayne, a club leader who was killed during a shootout with federal agents on June 15. ATF agents were trying to arrest Mayne in his home in Old Orchard Beach, Maine. The gangs don't usually get much attention, aside from a cable television show called the Sons of Anarchy.
But far away from TV screens, investigators are working to infiltrate the closed societies of biker gangs and bring criminal cases against their leaders.
'The investigation shows this group was a calculated criminal enterprise that was involved in trying to take over territory, narcotics routes, gambling establishments, and to utilize the brand of the Outlaws to facilitate criminal acts of not only themselves but other clubs,' said Rich Marianos, who supervised the Outlaws case for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives."

La Perla Organization vast majority of those arrested are either Latin King gang members or gang associates.

Bronx Heroin ring known as “La Perla Organization” has had its lucrative trade stopped dead in its tracks.
Bronx District Attorney Robert T. Johnson announced the seizure of more than $1.5 million in cash and an undisclosed amount of heroin today. The money and illegal drugs were taken during the execution of 15 search warrants in the Fordham area of the Bronx.
The warrants also lead to the arrests of 31 alleged members with authorities expecting more as the investigation continues. Authorities say a vast majority of those arrested are either Latin King gang members or gang associates.
Johnson noted that the joint investigation was conducted over 9-months and included 28 court ordered wiretaps, video surveillance, undercover heroin “buys” and observation by NYPD detectives.
Detectives purchased 4 kilograms of heroin sold under various brands including the namesake, La Perla, Tuna, Salsa, and Sabroso throughout their investigation. They also recovered four guns and confiscated twelve vehicles.
Court documents note that the ring was active over a period of five years from July 23, 2005 through July 22, 2010.
Authorities allege that “La Perla” sold heroin at three locations spread throughout the Bronx at Valentine Ave., between 194th and 196th Streets, 157th Street and Gerard Avenue, and 180th Street and Mohegan Avenue.
Johnson alleges that daily sales raked in $25,000 and $40,000 and only occurred during two five-hour shifts Monday through Friday with an additional eight-hour shift on the weekends.
A grand jury returned an 82 count indicted, charging most of the individuals involved with conspiracy to distribute, and varying counts of possession and sale of heroin.
Officials have identified Wilson Guerrero, Antonio Carasquillo, Enrique Esquillin, and Luis Esquillin with enterprise corruption and operating a major drug trafficker, a part of the Drug Kingpin Statue.
They are also charged with conspiracy in the 2nd degree and criminal sale and possession of a controlled substance.
If convicted the leaders of the ring can face a maximum sentence of up to life imprisonment if convicted of the most serious charge under the Drug Kingpin statute

Gunman approached the heavily tattooed biker, pumped his face full of lead and stomped on his head before walking away.

John Giampetruzzi, 41, was found dead on the sidewalk on 28th St. near Ditmars Blvd. around 5 a.m. Police sources described him as an ex-con and a member of the Hells Angels.

"I came outside and saw a man dead on the sidewalk," Phillip Graham, 56, said. "You couldn't even see what the poor man looked like because of the bullets."

Neighbors said the gunman - who is still on the lam - approached the heavily tattooed biker, pumped his face full of lead and stomped on his head before walking away.

Sources said Giampetruzzi had several prior arrests, including a slew of burglary pinches and drug-related busts. He was convicted of second-degree murder in 1989, the sources said.

The shooting Saturday rattled residents, who never imagined such a crime could happen on their Astoria block.

"I've lived here 30 years and have never seen this kind of violence," said Margarita Diakakos, 54. "To see a man shot dead on your street makes you afraid."

Henry Juarez, 30, a parolee, has been charged with the murder

Posted On 12:25 0 comments

two armed men opened fire on four men they thought were rival gang members on May 27, 2009 but missed their targets. One of the gunmen allegedly stepped in front of his friend and got shot instead.

Javier Gonzalez, 22, of Whittier died at a local hospital.

"That's our theory. That it's essentially friendly fire," said Deputy District Attorney Hector Gutierrez.

Now Gonzalez's friend and his girlfriend await trial for the 10:52 p.m. shooting on Norwalk Boulevard and Bexley Drive, which is in the unincorporated county area known as West Whittier.

Henry Juarez, 30, a parolee, has been charged with the murder of Gonzalez, four counts of attempted murder and one count of possession of a firearm by a felon with prior convictions.

He was also charged with the special allegations that he fired the handgun that caused great bodily injury and death to Gonzalez, intentionally discharged the weapon and personally used a handgun to commit the crime.

A second defendant, Stephanie Reyes, 21, was charged with four counts of attempted murder. Officials said Reyes was living in the Whittier area at the time of the shooting.

brothers Kenneth and Paul Corbally, aged 32 and 35. Their murder brought the number of gun homicides in Ireland to 15

Posted On 12:17 0 comments

Two gangland figures are sitting in a Lexus car in a suburban street on a summer evening. Their automobile is rammed from behind by a stolen Audi 6. Two masked men jump out and open fire on the Lexus with semi-automatic handguns, killing the men instantly.

The assassins drive to a deserted street a mile away, douse the car with gas, set it alight and escape. This professional hit — the killers are said to have received 40,000 euros ($50,000) each to “whack” the victims — took place in the Clondalkin suburb of Dublin on June 28.

The men slain were brothers Kenneth and Paul Corbally, aged 32 and 35. Their murder brought the number of gun homicides in Ireland to 15 since the start of the year.

The impunity with which their executioners acted underlined the fact that gun crime in Ireland — a country of just over 4 million people where possession of handguns is severely restricted — is rising fast and is practically out of control.

indictment of 18 members of the Latin Kings street gang’s “Borough Park Homicide Squad” gang, or “set”

indictment of 18 members of the Latin Kings street gang’s “Borough Park Homicide Squad” gang, or “set” – including the sets entire leadership structure – on charges they set fire to two Borough Park apartments, in an attempt to kill a former gang member.

The target of the arsons, Juan Kuang, 19, had been “stripped” of his Latin King status, over disagreements with the Borough Park Homicide Squad’s leaders. In retaliation, Kuang stabbed gang member Norman Vado, 21, the brother of the gang’s leader, or “First Crown”, Roger Vado, 25, according to a separate indictment. In that case, Kuang is charged with Attempted Murder in the Second Degree.

Roger Vado and the Borough Park Homicide Squad members are charged with setting the fires in retaliation for Norman Vado’s stabbing.

The indictment charges the defendants with making Molotov cocktails by filling glass iced-tea bottles with gasoline. On two separate occasions, the gang members threw these Molotov cocktails at two different Borough Park homes, where they believed Kuang was living at the time. One building, which was a multi-family unit where young children and an elderly woman lived, was completely destroyed. The other targeted building was an apartment complex, of which the exterior, rear wall was scorched and damaged.

News Essentials: Gang members who served in Afghanistan and Iraq are coming home with military training: "Being in a street gang is now forbidden for members of the U.S. armed forces. But you might not guess that if you were to visit U.S. military bases in Iraq and Afghanistan, according to soldiers who have recently served there.

Jeffrey Stoleson, a Wisconsin corrections official, returned from Iraq in January with photos of gang graffiti on armored vehicles, latrines and buildings. Stoleson, a sergeant with a National Guard unit, was there for nine months to help the Army set up a prison facility outside Baghdad. 'I saw Maniac Latin Disciples graffiti out of Chicago,' Stoleson said, adding that there was a lot of graffiti for Texas and California gangs, as well as Mexican drug cartels.

A Chicago Police officer -- who retired from the regular Army and was recently on a tour of Afghanistan in the Army Reserve -- said Bagram Air Base was covered with Chicago gang graffiti, everything from the Gangster Disciples' pitchfork to the Latin Kings' crown.

'It seems bigger now,' said the officer, who previously served a tour in Iraq, where he also saw gang graffiti.

Now back in Chicago, the officer said he has arrested high-level gang members who have served in the military and kept the 'Infantryman's bible' -- called the FM 7-8 -- in their homes. The book describes how to run for cover, fire a weapon tactically and do the 'three- to five-second rushes' seen in war movies."

Police arrest hundreds in Mafia raids - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation): "arrests in the United States, followed an extended investigation against a clan specialising in crimes linked to business and the financial sector, police said.

The group has expanded out of its heartland in the poor southern region of Calabria to play a major role in organised crime throughout Europe and in the international drugs trade from South America.
Tuesday's raids took place in Calabria and in rich northern regions into which the group has extended its operations. Italian authorities gave few initial details about arrests in the United States.

Teen dead after gangster's car vandalized: "20-year-old Surrey man who police say is a known gangster has been charged in the slaying this week of 17-year-old Adem Aliu, apparently after the youth had vandalized the gangster's car.
Steven Brandon Mulligan-Brum appeared in Surrey provincial court on Friday to face a charge of second-degree murder, police said.
Aliu was among a group of youths who had been drinking and vandalizing nearby parked cars.
Police said the driver of one of the vandalized cars caught up with the group two blocks from where the vehicle was parked, singled Aliu out from the group and shot him dead.
RCMP patrol officers found a fatally wounded Aliu lying in the street.
Mulligan-Brum was previously known to police.
Police said the teenager and some friends 'were acting like stupid children,' walking down the street slashing car tires and pushing in the door of one vehicle.
Aliu was not known to police and did not previously know his killer.

Mysterious fire at house bought with drug money :: CHICAGO SUN-TIMES :: Chicago Crime: "High-ranking Gangster Disciples member John Brown bought the home at 6209 S. Wolcott with cash -- $100, $50 and $20 bills -- that he earned from drug deals, authorities say.
On Jan. 7, a suspicious fire destroyed the home, whose value was estimated at $130,000, said Supervisory Special Agent Todd Reichert of the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
'Nothing's been ruled out,' Reichert said of the motive, asking anyone with information to call 888-ATF-TIPS.
In May, Brown was sentenced to 15 years in prison for selling narcotics. His father, Buck Fields -- a drug dealer whom Brown supplied with crack cocaine -- was sentenced Thursday to 27 months in prison.
Before he pleaded guilty, Brown portrayed himself as a home healthcare worker and a businessman who owned a hair salon, Beautiful Imagez. But ATF officials said they didn't have any documentation that Brown earned an income from the salon.
Instead, Brown was a drug dealer with 12 convictions, officials said. During a 2004 arrest by Chicago Police officers, he allegedly was carrying more than $4,700 in his pocket, according to prosecutors."

Black Power gang pad in Auckland that was seized and sold by the Crown appears to be back in the gang's hands.

Posted On 11:20 0 comments

The Mt Wellington building, once home to the gang's million-dollar-per-year cannabis operation, was confiscated under the Proceeds of Crime Act last year.

Black Power president Mark Pitman, who had owned the pad for 15 years, was sentenced to three and a half years in prison for masterminding the operation.

The house, which had a rateable value of $540,000, was sold by tender in January for $245,000 despite attempts by Pitman to purchase the property himself.

The buyer, property investors Houses 4 U Ltd, onsold the property to a trust which was now leasing the property to Black Power, The New Zealand Herald reported today.

Acting Detective Inspector Dave Lynch said police were aware the gang might be once again using the house.

"Should this be the case, then police are disappointed but remain vigilant to deal with any offending that the gang may continue to carry out at or around the address."

Any criminal activity would be investigated and police would use any powers to prevent further offending, including the new asset-recovery proceedings if "circumstances warrant it", he said.

shooting dead of Dublin criminal Stephen Byrne have arrested a boy aged 16.

Posted On 16:51 0 comments

GARDAƍ INVESTIGATING the shooting dead of Dublin criminal Stephen Byrne have arrested a boy aged 16. His arrest follows the questioning of two other people, one of whom is a 15-year-old boy.

The 16-year-old was arrested at 2pm yesterday in Dublin’s north inner-city. He was detained under section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act and is being questioned at Store Street Garda station. He can be held for 72 hours without charge.

GardaĆ believe the boy was one of a number of people who were talking to Byrne when he was shot dead at about 4.40pm on Tuesday at the junction of St Laurence Place East and Sheriff Street in Dublin’s north inner-city.

Byrne (32), a convicted criminal, lived at Mariner’s Port, just yards from where he was killed. He received a phone call while in his house and went out to meet somebody on the street. As he was talking to a group of people, a gunman approached on a mountain bike, shooting Byrne in the head and chest.

Those talking to Byrne fled as the gunman moved in. The killer, who used a handgun, escaped on his bike. The 16-year-old arrested yesterday was one of the group talking to Byrne just seconds before the shooting occurred.

The 15-year-old and a man in his 20s arrested on Tuesday night have been released without charge. Both were also among the group talking to Byrne.

The 15-year-old was detained for two nights but freed yesterday. All three arrested people are from the Sheriff Street area.

GardaĆ believe Byrne was killed as part of a gangland feud between rival factions around Sheriff Street that has cost five lives since 2006.

Byrne was a suspect for one of the earlier killings, that of Stephen Ledden (28), who was shot in a case of mistaken identity in December 2006.

Two of the other victims of the feud were cousins of Byrne. Gerard Batt Byrne (25) was shot in 2006 while Aiden Byrne (32) was shot in February.

The factions were once all members of the same gang. It split when its former leader was accused, and later convicted, of raping a woman over a sustained period from when she was a child.

The people v. Broderick Boys

The people v. Broderick Boys is the second attempt by the District Attorney's Office to secure a permanent injunction against the alleged gang, which establishes a 3 1/2-mile "safety zone" in the West Sacramento neighborhoods of Broderick and Bryte.

The injunction prohibits "validated members" from organizing or even communicating with one another and enforces a 10 p.m. curfew, among other restrictions.

Validated members are also put into state and federal gang databases and identified as "domestic terrorists."

A person in West Sacramento can be validated as a gang member if the person meets two of 11 criteria established by the Department of Justice. This ranges from a suspect outright admission of gang affiliation to wearing gang clothing, displaying gang symbols or frequenting known gang areas.

Critics compare the 10 p.m. curfew to an internment camp and argue the injunction is biased against Latino families and encourages staff at elementary schools to target youth as potential gang members.

The protesters deny the existence of a Broderick Boys gang and say the DAs Office and West Sacramento police are using the injunction as leverage for grants that reward "gang deterrence."

Maori and Pacific Island gangs are classed as the second most serious crime problem in Sydney

Maori and Pacific Island gangs are classed as the second most serious crime problem in Sydney, second only to violent Lebanese gangs.

Police regard them as a crime scourge because of their widespread involvement in house and car burglaries, with offenders starting as young as 14.

Their crime profile is worsening with Australia's bikie gangs recruiting Pacific Islanders to shore up numbers as Sydney's gang wars spew into suburban and city streets almost daily.

All but 10 of 32 drive-by shootings or bombings in the past six months have been linked to bike gangs.

Islanders are being targeted by newer and more violent gangs such as Notorious, formed in 2007, and chapters of the Bandidos, dominated by Middle Eastern migrants, particularly Lebanese, according to a police source.

The officer said gangs wanted Islanders for work as bouncers at their night clubs, security guards and for drug-running.

This is in addition to a long-standing recruitment of Maori into gangs though Australian police tend not to differentiate between Islanders and Maori, tagging them all as Polynesians.

The Australian Crime Commission estimates there are about 3500 outlaw bikies in Australia in 39 gangs. The number of Pacific Islanders involved is unclear.

The source said Australian police considered Polynesians who had arrived in Sydney via New Zealand to be the second most serious crime problem in Sydney behind Lebanese criminals.

Bloodshed in Chicago has far surpassed the Capone era

Bilek, who took office in January, dusted off the list and modernized it after a 70-plus year hibernation to address a "critical" situation.

"We're going to help hunt down the most serious drug, gang and murderous offenders in the Chicagoland area," he said.

"We think it's time these scum and vermin are brought to justice," said Bilek. "Some of them are probably still living right here in the Chicago area, anonymously."
Citizens can anonymously call the "Most Wanted Hotline" at (312) 372-0155 and give tips without having to speak with police.
The "Most Wanted" list released Tuesday, composed of nine men and one woman in no specific order, was complied by surveying local, state and federal law enforcement groups. The list, which will be updated again in about six months, can be viewed on Facebook and other social networking sites, as well as the commission's website -- www.chicagocrimecommission.org.
The original "Public Enemies" list named 50 people, 35 of which were captured in the first five years, said Bilek, a former Chicago cop with decades of experience battling organized crime.

word "murder" tattooed across his neck. Or trying to convince a jury that the suspect is really a good guy even though his best friend knows him only as "Bloody Batman."

With gangs gaining strength in Baltimore, nicknames are gaining popularity on the street, and more often than not it's a nickname rather than a real name by which many are known. And law enforcement authorities, especially the feds, don't hesitate to use the monikers.

Here's a sample from one recent indictment filed in U.S. District Court in Baltimore: charged were Sticks, Face, Tink, Pudge, Fat Boy, Slinky, Big Boy, Big Man, Gotti, Mud, Wimp, Nitty and Zitty.

The Baltimore Sun's Tricia Bishop wrote about gang nicknames last year, and the list of new ones keeps growing. More and more, defense attorneys and prosecutors say, the nicknames reflect violence rather than a personality trait or physical characteristic.

In the past, Baltimore had "Peanut King." Now, "Murder" and "Killer" are becoming more common as nicknames, not to mention "Savage" and various forms of the word "bloody." Young men tattoo the names to their necks and arms, or ink teardrops under their eyes, one for each person they've killed.

Maryland prison guard among 15 accused of helping Black Guerilla Family gang: "Alicia Simmons, 34, of Pikesville, a correctional officer at the maximum security Maryland Correctional Adjustment Center in Baltimore, was among those charged. Prosecutors said she was arrested Tuesday morning at the prison.
In recent years, federal officials in Maryland have cracked down on the Black Guerilla Family, or BGF, which they say first gained a foothold in the state's prisons and jails in the 1990s. Fourteen defendants in the case previously faced drug charges in connection with their alleged involvement in the gang, authorities said, but the new indictment added a racketeering charge."

Gangsters have a new drug of choice

Posted On 11:46 0 comments

Gangsters have a new drug of choice: "Dennis Karbovanec walked into a Surrey high-rise in October 2007 and shot three people in the head, he was addicted to the powerful prescription painkiller OxyContin.
And when his former Red Scorpion gang-mate Anton Hooites-Meursing played a role in the same Surrey Six murder plot, he was also struggling with an addiction to the pill police say is akin to 'prescription heroin.'
Jamie Bacon, the purported Red Scorpion leader, is similarly addicted to the drug, according to a Surrey pretrial memo highlighted in a recent B.C. Supreme Court ruling condemning Bacon's jail conditions.
Police say an increasing number of mid-level B.C. gangsters are popping Oxys to relieve the stress and pain of their volatile life in the criminal underworld.
And one former gangster says the big problem with the synthetic opiate used to control intense pain is that it removes inhibitions to troubling gang behaviours including acts of brutality and violence.
In the last two months alone, Abbotsford police have arrested two gang-linked men with sizable stashes of OxyContin."

Gang's 'Christopher Columbus' deported

Posted On 06:54 0 comments

Gang's 'Christopher Columbus' deported: "Ecuadorian man who brought a large and dangerous global street gang to Canada — described as the gang’s Christopher Columbus for opening up a New World to the organization — has been deported, along with three of his henchmen.
The heavily tattooed Flavio Mauricio Reyes-Criollo, 23, went by the nickname “King Fido” within the Almighty Latin King and Queen Nation in Toronto but liked when gang members called him “the godfather” in deference to his role in bringing the Hispanic gang here in 2003.
“Canada is a new frontier,” a former member of the ALKQN said of the expansion, colourfully describing Reyes-Criollo as their “CristĆ³bal ColĆ³n,” the Spanish name for the famed explorer who discovered the Americas for the Spanish throne in 1492.
Last month, Reyes-Criollo’s explorations ended.
He was escorted back to his native Ecuador after being declared a non-Canadian member of a criminal organization."

Gang arrests: Four more arrests brings to 37 the number of arrests in Daytona Beach - OrlandoSentinel.com: "arrrest this afternoon of a New Smyrna Beach man, 37 members of the street gang '819 Boyz' have been arrested as part of Operation 819, a 20-month investigation into violent gun- and drug-related crimes in Daytona Beach.
Most of the arrests occurred Tuesday as part of the joint operation between Daytona Beach police and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
Another five suspects are being sought.
They chose 819 as the name of the gang because it was the street address of a federal housing project on South Street, said Daytona Beach police Sgt. Paul Barnett. That complex has since been razed and replaced by Lakeside Village Apartments, he said.
During more than 100 undercover operations, federal agents and Daytona Beach officers bought 78 firearms, 1,200 grams of crack cocaine and more than 400 prescription pain pills. One weapon, a shotgun, had been stolen from a Volusia County deputy sheriff."
