Dozens linked to motorcycle gangs arraigned | Richmond Times-Dispatch: "More than two dozen current and former motorcycle gang members, including the national head of the Outlaws, were arraigned in federal court yesterday on racketeering and other charges.
All 25 pleaded not guilty in a one-hour hearing before U.S. District Judge Henry E. Hudson, who set a two-week trial to begin Oct. 20.
Twenty-three of the men were in custody and led into the courtroom in assorted jail uniforms, each in handcuffs attached to a waist chain and wearing ankle shackles. Some looked the image of tough, tattooed, long-haired bikers, while others were neatly groomed.
A 50-page, 12-count indictment this month accuses them of engaging in crimes including attempted murder, kidnapping, assault, robbery, extortion, witness intimidation, narcotics distribution, illegal gambling, weapons offenses and a civil-rights violation.
Two of the 27 originally indicted were not in court yesterday. Thomas 'Tomcat' Mayne, 59, of Old Orchard Beach, Maine, was shot to death June 15 when authorities tried to arrest him. Another, Michael 'Madman' Pedini, 39, is still being held by Maine authorities.
Most were Outlaws members, including Jack 'Milwaukee Jack' Rosga, 53, the gang's national president. A tall, heavyset man with graying hair and a beard, Rosga said his education ended in elementary school and that he has difficulty reading."

Vancouver gang member arrested at suspected Penticton drug operation: "Vancouver Police boasted they had 'cut the heart' out of a violent new street gang called the Game Tight Soldiers by arresting its leader and shipping him off to Ontario on Con-Air to face outstanding charges.
But earlier this week, Steven Philip King, 37, was arrested back in B.C. at a Penticton house where police said they found evidence of a drug operation.
King and his co-accused, 27-year-old Kerry James Ellis, made their first appearance in Penticton Provincial Court Tuesday.
Penticton RCMP said officers arrested King at a residence and Ellis a short distance away. Police found a baggie containing eight `spitballs' of crack cocaine with a total weight of 6.7 grams, two sets of digital scales, cash, cellphones, a quantity of unknown pills, and a laptop computer that had RCMP said was stolen in Edmonton.
Sgt. Rick Dellebuur said King has some ties in the Penticton area and is alleged to have been running a dial-a-dope operation.
'He has been back here for a bit,' Dellebuur said. 'He basically has got a bunch of little henchmen working for him.'
Dellebuur said many Penticton residents are not aware that 'big city gangs' are operating in the community and police want to get the word out.
He said there is quite a cocaine trade in the south Okanagan city."

Maryland: Hagerstown woman sentenced to 30 years in racketeering case: "Michelle Hebron, 25, of Hagerstown, admitted to being involved in the statewide racketeering conspiracy as a member of the Tree Top Piru Bloods, a branch of the Bloods street gang.
Murphy said part of the federal government’s racketeering case included a murder charge against Hebron.
Hebron was charged with the Oct. 5, 2007, shooting death of David Moore, 23, who was found lying at the base of a staircase in the first-floor hallway of an apartment building at 101 East Ave. in Hagerstown.
Murphy said federal prosecutors did not have to prove in court that Hebron murdered Moore because she confessed to committing the crime.
Prosecutors said that Hebron wrote a poem about the killing, saying she shot Moore because he was wearing the wrong gang colors.
According to a Justice Department press release, “Hebron was a member of the (Tree Top Piru Bloods) and regularly met with other TTP gang members to discuss, among other things, past acts of violence and other crimes committed by gang members against rival gang members and others ... Terry Adams, Britain’s most feared gangster, leaves jail: "Terry Adams, Britain’s most feared gangster, yesterday walked to freedom after serving just half of a seven-year sentence for money laundering.
In what could have been a scene from The Godfather, he was greeted by a glamorous brunette in black and two sidekicks.
Wearing an open-necked white shirt tucked into khaki trousers, Adams looked relaxed as the attractive young woman stepped out of a £60,000 black Range Rover wearing dark glasses, a black skirt and jacket and high heels.
She was joined by two powerfully built men in an £80,000 red Porsche Cayenne 4×4, who whisked the mobster away when he appeared in the car park at Spring Hill Open Prison near Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire at breakfast-time.
Adams, 55, built up an estimated fortune of £200million through a vast racketeering and drug trafficking empire, which has been linked to 25 murders.
Potential witnesses have been too terrified to testify against the gangster but he was jailed for seven years in March 2007 for the relatively minor charge of money laundering."

Jamaican gang boss arrested on way to American embassy | World news | The Guardian: "Jamaican police have captured the once powerful gang leader, Christopher 'Dudus' Coke, as he was on his way to surrender to the US embassy in Kingston weeks after leading a bloody urban battle to avoid deportation for trial to New York.
Coke appears to have wanted to hand himself in to the Americans out of concern for his safety after his father died in a mysterious prison cell fire that some Jamaicans believe was intended to prevent him talking in court about the close links between the island's criminal gangs and leading politicians.
The authorities declared a curfew in large parts of Kingston after warning that further violence by Coke's powerful Shower Posse gang was 'expected imminently' following their leader's arrest.
Last night, Coke, 42, who was described as the 'don of criminal dons' and until recently widely regarded as the most powerful man in Jamaica, was being held in a police station near Kingston that was heavily fortified by police guards."

Lawyer considers appeal of bail refusal for reputed gangster | Calgary & Alberta | News | Calgary Sun: "lawyer for alleged gangster and convicted killer Vuthy Kong will consider an appeal of a judge’s decision Monday to keep him behind bars pending trial.
Defence counsel David Andrews said he will assess provincial court Judge Allan Fradsham’s ruling before deciding his next move.
“I’m reviewing, carefully, the judge’s decision and considering our options,” Andrews said, following Fradsham’s decision to deny Kong bail.
Fradsham agreed with Crown prosecutor Scott Couper that based on Kong’s history, he was a likely candidate to reoffend if released.
Andrews had proposed the judge allow Kong out pending trial on drug-related charges.
Kong was arrested last week after police allegedly saw a man making drug deliveries.
A subsequent search of a vehicle and a Radcliffe Cl. S.E. home found crack cocaine, Oxycontin pills, cannabis and ecstasy,
Kong was responsible for a 2002 slaying that was followed by more than two dozen gang-related killings which have been blamed on rivalry between two high-profile groups."

Investigators targeting street-level drug dealing in Albert Park and Radisson Heights arrested Vuthy Kong early Wednesday evening during a traffic stop in neighbouring Forest Lawn.
Officers checked Kong's vehicle and subsequently searched his home on Radcliffe Close S.E. early Thursday.
Police said they found ecstasy, marijuana, marijuana oil and small amounts of the powerful prescription painkiller oxycodone.
The investigation began after Alberta Sheriffs shut down a drug house in the 2000 block of 38th Street S.E. last month and passed along information about Kong to Calgary police.
'He was one of the people dropping off drugs at that residence,' Calgary police Sgt. Mark Hatchette said.
Police then targeted Kong, said Hatchette, and allegedly saw him supplying narcotics to other drug houses in the area.
Police said they found 44 grams of hash oil and 20 grams of ecstasy packed in a small container in Kong's home.
They believe the container's intended use was to smuggle drugs into a jail -- usually done by hiding it in a body cavity."

Gang slaying suspects make court appearance - San Jose Mercury News: "Judge Michael Barton appointed attorneys to represent Jose Meza, 18, and Joel Sanchez, 30. Both face charges of murder and gang participation, as well as allegations they used guns.
Meza and Sanchez are accused of walking up to Richard Campos, 21, the night of Sept. 15 and firing five to 10 shots. Campos, whose mother said he was a gang wannabee, was hit twice in the torso and died at the scene, near Roache Road and Carey Avenue.
Police have characterized the killing as a gang training, where an older gangster -- in this case, Sanchez -- takes a younger gang member along to show them how to commit crimes. Meza was 17 at the time of the shooting. Both of Sanchez and Meza had guns and fired shots, though investigators have not said whose bullets caused Campos' mortal wounds.
Meza and Sanchez were arrested Friday. The case had languished for months, but detectives developed information in the homicide during the Watsonville Police Department's year-long probe into a violent Sureno street gang in the city. Meza and Sanchez allegedly are members of that gang. 'Operation Groundhog' culminated in May with more than 40 arrests, mostly gang members jailed for gun or drug crimes."

Sniper sensors from Iraq and Afghanistan to be used in Birmingham - Times Online: "Technology that locates snipers in Afghanistan and Iraq is being deployed by police on the streets of Birmingham to identify where a gun is fired from.
The ShotSpotter will use audio sensors spread around the northwest of the city, where most of the gun crime occurs, and will recognise the acoustic soundwaves made by a shot fired up to two miles away.
Once a gun has been fired the sensors will detect the location to within ten metres. The system will send the details to the force control room within seconds. Armed officers can then be scrambled without the need for a 999 call and CCTV cameras can be focused on the area.
The technology, the first of its kind in Britain, is also able to tell whether a gun has been fired from a moving car, which direction it is travelling in and how many guns have been fired."

Two people, a 21-year-old man and a 31-year-old woman, are facing drug charges, while a 35-year-old man is facing both drug and impaired-driving charges after returning to the apartment on a motorcycle and refusing to give a breath sample.
The second man is an associate of a well-known UN Gang member, Abbotsford Const. Ian MacDonald said Wednesday.
Both men are named on the APD's hit list of more than 130 gangsters living and doing business in Abbotsford, say police, who did not release the names of those arrested."

Reputed gang leader goes on trial in San Jose federal courtroom - San Jose Mercury News: "35-year-old Anh The Duong sat placidly as Assistant U.S. Attorney Shawna Yen described him as the force behind the criminal organization. 'He led,' Yen told jurors. 'He was the linchpin.'
Federal prosecutors have charged Duong in a sweeping racketeering indictment that includes links to murders in San Jose and Fremont, as well as the murders of four people in an El Monte pool hall in 1999. A Southern California jury already put Duong on California's death row for the El Monte murders, but the U.S. Justice Department is nevertheless pushing the racketeering charges and seeking the death penalty in the federal case, which could lead to a swifter execution date in the federal system if he is convicted.
Duong's trial marks just the second time in the past 50 years that a defendant has faced the death penalty in a Bay Area federal courtroom, the other ending last summer in a life-in-prison verdict for a Western Addition gang leader who stood trial in San Francisco. U.S. District Judge Jeremy Fogel needed nearly three months to seat a jury able to commit to the six-month Duong trial."

Two groups of suspected gang members fired off some 15 shots on a corner in Five Points a little more than a week ago

Posted On 20:48 0 comments

Two groups of suspected gang members fired off some 15 shots on a corner in Five Points a little more than a week ago. The shooting has gotten the attention and the Richland County Sheriff's Department's Gang Task Force and the State Law Enforcement Division.

We talked to a witness who saw the shooting from only a few feet away.

"A large fight broke out involving dozens of people and maybe a minute after the fight started," said a witness, whose identity we agreed to hide. "I heard a gunshot and then a pause and then just a rapid barrage almost of gunfire and then everybody just scattered. After that, I was running, too. I didn't know what was going on."

The man watched as two gangs turned the corner of Greene and Harden in to a gun fight. "Guys dressed in mostly blue and black and then another group of guys, much larger group of guys dressed with red hats, red t-shirts," he said.

It happened just after 2:00am on May 23, right behind Grilled Teriyaki in the heart of Five Points. Investigators recovered around 15 shell casings that night. A bullet hit one man in the leg, landed in the door of Group Therapy, and a bullet ripped through the window at Pour House.

"We're not going to allow them to take over, we're not going to allow them to take that as their turf, that they're in charge -- that's not going to happen," said Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott, who fielded calls and emails from the people who live and work in five points.

Lott sent his gang unit down last weekend to case the area. "We're trying to identify the individuals," he said. "There are actually gangs members and that's what we were able to find out last weekend, that there is confirmed gang members who are meeting in the Five Points area and basically hanging out and causing some of the problems that Five Points have been experiencing."

triggerman in a gang assault that rocked Amador County on March 14 - leaving one teenager with a bullet hole in his face

Posted On 20:45 0 comments

suspected triggerman in a gang assault that rocked Amador County on March 14 - leaving one teenager with a bullet hole in his face, and another bleeding from the neck - appeared in court on May 27. Later that evening, parents and teens from the community gathered to hear about Amador's new gang task force. They also met former gang members in person, learning what could happen if Nortenos or Surenos are allowed to develop a following in the area.

It was 3:15 p.m. when Gilbert Zaragoza was brought into Amador Superior Court in chains. The 19-year-old Stockton man is facing two counts of attempted murder. Prosecutors believe that security footage from the Jackson Rancheria Casino depicts Zaragoza pulling a gun and firing on two known members of the Sureno street gang. Zaragoza is a member of the Nortenos.

During the hearing, Amador County District Attorney Todd Riebe explained to Judge David Richmond that the only offer he was leaning toward extending to the defense fell in the ballpark of 25-years-to-life in prison. Zaragoza's attorney, Public Defender Kyle Smith, told the judge there was still one element of discovery evidence that he needed to review before he could adequately advise his client on accepting or not accepting possible plea bargains. Richmond gave Smith time to review the evidence, setting Zaragoza's next hearing for late June.

While gang experts classify the Rancheria shooting as a near-deadly example of "transient gang activity," or certified gang members from cities committing crimes while passing through Amador, some local cops have become increasingly alarmed by Jackson and Ione teenagers attempting to emulate gangs like the Nortenos. In the last year, a number of felonies, including several violent assaults, have been committed by young men from Amador County in the name of the Norte'os.

A new investigation headed by Riebe proved that known gang members from other areas are indeed communicating with Amador teens via online social networking sites. In one case, Riebe discovered that a Norte'o man in his mid-50s, with a Myspace account that glorified drugs and shootings, was regularly chatting with Amador teenagers as young as 14 and 15 years old. "What business does any man that age from another city have talking to teens in this community online?" Riebe pointed out to the Ledger Dispatch. "And then you add his gang affiliation into the mix, and it's even more disturbing."
